AID — Down but not out.

With the aid of five errors in the eighth inning including one series of mistakes that led to four runs on the same play, the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings rallied to beat the Western Indians 10-9 on Wednesday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Trailing 9-4 in the eighth, Autumn Keathley singled, Brenna Morris was hit by a pitch and Cheianne Hivley was safe on an error to load the bases.

After two strikeouts, Karie Brumbaugh walked for the first run. Beth Brown then reached on a throwing error as a run scored. The throw home was wild and a run scored. A return throw to third base was bad scoring two more runs.

Katie Hill reached on an error, Hannah Maynard singled and Hill scored the winning run when the throw home was dropped.

“They didn’t quit. They fought to the end. They put the ball in play and made things happen,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.

Hill had an RBI single in the first inning but Western tied the game in the second.

Three errors and a walked enabled the Lady Vikings to score twice in the bottom of the inning.

Western led 4-3 in the seventh but Brumbaugh walked, moved up on a wild pitch and scored the tying run when the catcher threw the ball away at first base on a missed third strike.

Maynard was 2-4 and Hill 2-5 to lead the Vikings’ offense.
