CHESAPEAKE — Hitting and defense were the difference.

The Chesapeake Lady Panthers had 11 hits and only one error as they beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 10-5 on Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We swung the bats well and we played good defense. Every time they made a run we answered,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice.

Chesapeake took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Sarah Rice reached on an error, Jordan Porter was hit by a pitch and Macy Allen singled for two runs. Ali Ransbottom was safe on an error and Carrie Brock singled in a run.

The lead went to 4-0 in the second when Rice doubled and Anna Mayo singled.

Another run scored in the third on a triple by Allen and courtesy runner Sydnee Hall scored on Brock’s ground out.

Coal Grove got a run in the fourth on singles by Kaitlyn Murphy, Deanna Bentley and Morgan Sites.

But Chesapeake got two in the bottom of the inning and it was 7-1.

Rice reached on a fielder’s choice and Mayo had an RBI triple. Caitlin Heffner then hit a sacrifice fly.

The Lady Hornets got three in the fifth when Brittany Webb and Ashley Goad singled, Murphy walked and Bentley had a three-run double.

Coal Grove added a run in the sixth on a double by McKayla Truesdell, a passed ball and an error.

But Chesapeake scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

Rice tripled and scored when Heffner reached on an error. Porter singled and Allen doubled home both runners.

Allen went 3-4 while Rice and Mayo each went 2-4 for Chesapeake.

Webb was 2-4 for Coal Grove.
