Homelessness isn’t problem just for cities
Stereotypes and misconceptions can be two of the biggest hurdles when facing the social issue of homelessness here in Lawrence County and the Tri-State.
The first step is to simply acknowledge that the problem exists here. Far too often homelessness is perceived as a big-city issue or just a few isolated cases in the area.
That simply isn’t true as Lawrence County agencies assist hundreds of people each year who find themselves in this situation, often something they never dreamed would happen to them.
Another key hurdle to overcome is the belief that anyone who is homeless is either on drugs or does nothing to try to improve their situation.
This too is false.
Although it may be the case sometimes it is unfair to apply these generalizations to everyone.
Our nation remains mired in difficult economic times. Many good people find themselves in bad situations.
The local agencies helping homeless individuals, both in the short term and to create long-term plans, deserve tremendous praise for their efforts.
We are all one community and we must work together to make it a better place for everyone.
