Doug Ison

Doug Ison, 72 of Pedro, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Doug graduated from Rock Hill in 1958. He worked 25 years for National Mines Service Company and 16 years for Eimco Corporation. Doug was an avid golfer and an active member of the Ironton Country Club for 33 years where he won multiple club events and was highly respected by his golfing peers.

Doug was born on April 27, 1940, to the late Earl and Alice Ison. Surviving is his loving wife of fifty two and a half years Linda and his four wonderful children and spouses: Doug and Paula Ison of Jackson, Dave and Jana Ison of Pedro, Teresa and John Schlaegel of Newark, and Sherri and Danny Webb of Georgetown, Ky. Doug has one brother, James Ison of Pedro, and one sister Shirley, wife of Ivan Scholl of Naples, Fla. He has eight grandchildren: Mindy, Marie, Brittany, Matthew, Davy, Josh, Tyler, and Brody; and one great grandchild Emeryson. Anyone who knew Doug was well aware that he was a dedicated husband and father and will surely be missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home with Brother Jack Pemberton officiating. Burial will follow in Ison Cemetery. Virginia DeLong

Virginia “Jenny” DeLong, 90, of South Point, arrived in Heaven at 11:20 pm Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

Born Nov. 21, 1921 in Lawrence County, Jenny was the daughter of the late Florence and Orestes Townsend.

Jenny was a graduate of Pedro High School where she played basketball and met the love of her life, Henry DeLong of Kitts Hill. Jenny and Henry were married April 27, 1941. They spent the majority of their married life rearing a family in South Point. Along with her joy of being a mother, Jenny also enjoyed bowling and bowled in the same league for 40 years. She also enjoyed participating each year in the Mothers’ March for the March of Dimes where she won many awards for her fundraising efforts on behalf of her late grandchildren, Lori and Brent. She was a member of First Baptist Church, South Point. In addition to her parents, Jenny was preceded in death by her sisters, Marjorie Townsend and Irene Brown; a brother, Ross Townsend; and grandchildren, Lori and Brent Carpenter.

Jenny is survived by her husband of 71 years, Henry DeLong of South Point; a son, Jeff (Linda) DeLong of South Point; a daughter, Jeanine (Sam) Carpenter of Scott Depot, W.Va.; and grandsons, Eric (Katie) Carpenter of Oak Hill, W.Va. and Jeffrey DeLong of South Point.

Pastor Daniel Beaver will officiate the services for Jenny, which will be held at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, Solida Road, South Point on Monday. Viewing will begin at 1p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. Entombment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point.

 

Arizona Kirk

Arizona Kirk, 88, of South Point, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at a local health care center in Ironton.

The Stinnett, Ky., native was born Nov. 25, 1923, the daughter of the late J.D. and Lula Viars. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Kirk.

Mrs. Kirk attended the Good Shepherd Holiness Church and was a foster grandparent at the Lawrence County Early Childhood Center.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Kirk; two daughters, Bonnie Webb and Sheila Ann Kirk; two brothers, Bob Viars and Calhoun Viars and two sisters, Zona May and Grace Fox.

She is survived by a son, Roger Kirk of South Point; three grandchildren, J.J. Webb and Chris Kirk both of South Point and Charles Webb of Ironton; six great grandchildren. James Webb and Katie Webb both of South Point, Shannon Webb of Athalia, Robbie Webb, Adam Webb and Tyler Webb all of Ironton.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Paynter officiating. Burial will follow in Getaway Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

 

Kathy Doss

Kathy Lee Doss, 57, of Chesapeake, died Monday, April 30, 2012, at her residence. She was the wife of Boyd Doss, who survives.

Nell Fulks

Nell F. Fulks, 95, of Proctorville, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at Heartland of Riverview. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home. Geneva Wisenberger

Geneva A. Wisenberger, 88, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Ironton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her daughter’s arms on April, 20 2012.

Formerly of Ironton, she went to St. Petersburg to live with her daughter, Debbie Rowe, in 2003. She remained at home with her daughter until passing.

Geneva was predeceased by her husband, Glen Wisenberger, in 1995 and her eldest daughter, Kaye Wilson, in 2000. She is survived by her youngest daughter Debbie Rowe.

Geneva was an active member of the Elm Street Church of the Nazarene for many years. She was an active member of the Republican Party from the time she graduated from Hanging Rock High School. She was an excellent bowler and bowled until she moved to Florida. Geneva enjoyed cooking, crafts, basketball and many other activities as well.

A memorial service is pending. Arrangements will be published in the paper as soon as possible.

 

Donald Vanderpool

Donald Vanderpool, 81, of Ironton passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.

The Cincinnati native was born Sept. 3, 1930, the son of the late Bert and Mildred Step Vanderpool. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sally Jo Hoertel Vanderpool, who passed away May 31, 2003.

Mr. Vanderpool was a U.S. Korean War Army veteran and was a machinist who retired from Ashland Oil after 40 years of service with that corporation. He attended the First Baptist Church of Ironton, enjoyed fishing and spending time at the YMCA in Ashland, Ky.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Jon Eric Vanderpool.

He is survived by a son, Don Alan Vanderpool of Clearwater, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Karl Dean and Kathy Vanderpool of Coal Grove; daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Armando Lara of Ironton; son, Jay Bert Vanderpool of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Kelli Jo Vanderpool-Lutz of Ashland, Ky.; daughter and son-in-law, Karin Sue and Joel Roach of Ironton; brother, Darwin Vanderpool of Ironton; sisters-in-law, Karlene Ainsworth of Ironton, Lynn Hoertel O’Leary and Cindy Hoertel both of Athens; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Manfred Langer officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 8850. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home. Bill Blevins

Bill W. Blevins Sr., 77, of Westwood, Ky., died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center. He was the wife of Rebecca Bailey Blevins, who survives. Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Anthony Keaton. Burial will follow in the Caroline Cemetery.
