Hornets win D-3 district track title

OAK HILL — When the Coal Grove Hornets got to the regional track meet next week, they’ll take a district championship trophy with them.
The Hornets won the Division III district track meet Saturday in a field of 21 teams. Coach had 96.5 points to runner-up Lucasville Valley 61 points.
In the girls’ standings, Wheelersburg won the meet with 115.33 points follow by Reedsville Eastern with 98.33 and Coal Grove was third with 94 points.
The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional meet at Lancaster Fairfield Union on Wednesday and Friday.
The Hornets’ Greg Bender — who qualified in the discus earlier in the week — won the shot put at 51-7 and will compete in two events at the regional.
Also racking up two first-place finishes was Bryan Steele in the 400 at 52.91 seconds and in the high jump at 6-2.
The Hornets’ 4×200 relay team of Mason Nance, Alex Bare, Aaron Wilson and Steele won with a 1:33.42 time.
Jacob Pauley was second in the 800 at 2:02.54.
Garrett Schultz ran a 17.0 and was eighth in 110 hurdles. Nance was eighth in 100 meters at 12.05 and seventh in the 200 meters at 24.23.
The 4×100 relay team of Isaiah Gunther, Nance, Bare and Wilson ran a 45.97 to take fourth.
The 4×400 relay was third as Jake Jewell, Jacob Pauley, T.J. Barrett and Bare ran a 3:38.26 time.
Brandon Adkins was seventh in the high jump at 5-10. Steele was third in the long jump at 20-2.5
Kyle Estep cleared 12-feet to take third in the pole vault. Ian McFarland went 11-feet and was fifth in the event.
The Lady Hornets 4×100-meter relay team of Kim Short, Jacy Jones, Leslie Mulkey and Bailey Harrison won with a 52.27 time.
Katey Erwin cleared 7-foot to win the pole vault.
Taking second was the 4×400 relay team of Ashley Adkins, Haley Johnson, Jones and Mulkey with a 4:31.39 time.
Harrison ran a 16.99 and was third in 100-meter hurdles. She was second in the 200 meters at 27.50.
Short finished fifth in the 100 meters at 13.81 and was sixth in 300 hurdles at 52.97.
Jones, Johnson, Harrison and Short combined for a 1:53.94 to take fourth in the 4×200 relay.
Tori Holmes was fifth in the 1600 at 6:21.41. She was sixth in the 3200 at 14:40.92 while Sami Stormes was eighth at 15:44.65.
Johnson was third in 400 at 1:04.51 and Mulkey fourth in the 800 with a 2:40.54 time.
Darrien Hankins took third with a toss of 104-1 in discus while Ashley Collins was seventh at 81-6. Johnson was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14-7.5.
