ATLANTA (AP) — The trainer of Paul Williams says the boxer has been paralyzed from the waist down after being involved in a motorcycle crash in the Atlanta suburbs.

George Peterson told The Associated Press that Williams is expected to have surgery Wednesday and has been listed in serious but stable condition on Monday at an undisclosed hospital.

He says the crash happened Sunday morning in Marietta after Williams tried to avoid another car trying to negotiate a curve. He says the motorcycle went up an embankment and he was thrown from the bike, severing his spinal cord after falling on his back and head.

Peterson says Williams was scheduled to fight Saul Alvarez on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas but that event has been canceled.
