HUNTINGTON — From the Big Green Scholarship Foundation and Marshall University Athletics, it’s time for a season-ending thank you … and a heads-up.

The Big Green is closing its 2011-12 membership year with a nearly 70-percent rise in membership over the last three years, and the club wants to make sure those numbers continue to grow.

“The growth in membership, especially with the launch of the Vision Campaign and support needed for other projects, is astounding. It’s a testament to the generosity of our Big Green members,” said Teddy Kluemper III, Marshall’s Director of Athletic Development.

In that regard, members are reminded that renewals – sent earlier this spring – must be returned by June 29 in order for Big Green members to have their names appear in the Thundering Herd football game program for six home dates in the 2012 season.

“That’s of the utmost importance, and it is important that our donors be recognized for their gifts,” said John Sutherland, MU’s Associate Athletic Director for Development and Big Green Executive Director.

There’s also a very special thanks to contributors from the Herd’s most recent football star and NFL Draft pick, defensive end Vinny Curry of the Philadelphia Eagles:

“I just want to thank the Big Green members for all the support and things you guys do for the school and for football and the entire athletic program,” Curry said. “Marshall is truly a first-class program, and I am very blessed to have a degree from there and to be part of a great alumni group. Thank you and God bless.”

Some numbers to reflect the rise in Big Green membership and contributions in recent years, annual giving figures that do not include the ongoing Vision Campaign to enhance facilities:

• The 2009 membership rolls totaled about 1,900. The 2011-12 year closes with 3,214 members. In the last year, the Big Green increased its membership 25 percent, not including the Vision Campaign contributions and commitments.

• In 2009, the Big Green ranked 10th among Conference USA schools in athletic scholarship club membership. Today, the Big Green members have lifted the Herd to No. 3 among the current 12 members, behind only East Carolina and UCF.

• Over the last three years, the Big Green has seen a 40 percent increase in the number of donors at our highest two levels — Green Scholar ($12,400-$19,299) and Herd Scholar ($19,300 and above).

• Over the last three years, there also has been a 50 percent increase in the number of Big Green donors in the Coaches’ Circle ($2,500-$4,999) and Directors’ Circle ($5,000-$12,399) levels.

The Big Green appreciates that support, both in annual giving and the Vision Campaign, and we want members – renewing and new ones – to get their memberships in by June 29 to be listed with your fellow club members in the football programs.
