Henry DeLong

Henry R. DeLong, 91, of South Point, died Friday, June 29, 2012, at Heartland of Riverview. Henry was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Lawrence County. He was the son of the late Henry and Estella Waugh DeLong. Henry was a graduate of Kitts Hill High School where he made many friends and enjoyed attending class reunions each year. He was employed at Dayton Malleable Iron for 42 years and served in the military during WWII. Henry enjoyed the youth of South Point, attending football and basketball games until he was unable to do so. Neighbors were always welcome to sit and talk and enjoy the porch he loved so much.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years and the love of his life, Virginia Townsend DeLong; parents, Henry and Estella; sisters, Irene Walls and Marie Kock; a brother, Thomas DeLong; and grandchildren, Lori and Brent Carpenter.

He is survived by a son, Jeff (Linda) DeLong of South Point; a daughter, Jeanine (Sam) Carpenter of Scott Depot, W.Va.; two grandsons, Eric (Katie) Carpenter of Oak Hill, W.Va., and Jeffrey Delong of South Point; a sister, Betty Jenkins of Ironton and a brother, Floyd Delong of Englewood, Fla.

The Rev. Kevin Snow will officiate the service for Henry which will be Monday at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, 802 Solida Rd., South Point. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the service at noon. Entombment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point. Condolences may be expressed at www.slackandwallace.com.

 

Dixie Rigsby

Dixie Lee Rigsby, 67, of Coal Grove, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at The Sanctuary of the Ohio Valley Nursing Facility in Ironton. The Ironton native was born March 28, 1945, the daughter of the late Charles and Nora “Peggy” (Moore) Murphy. She is survived by her husband David H. Rigsby.

Mrs. Rigsby was a 1963 graduate of Dawson Bryant High School and received her nursing degree from Kings Daughter School of Nursing in Ashland, Ky. She was retired as a nurse from the Huntington, W.Va., VA Medical Center. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Coal Grove, where she was choir director.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and a daughter-law, William “Bill” Rigsby of Coal Grove, and Jere and Rachael Rigsby also of Coal Grove; a brother, Marty and Jamie Murphy of Coal Grove; four grandchildren, Jordan Rigsby, Katie Rigsby, Jerileigh Rigsby, and Jesse Rigsby; two nephews, Zack Murphy and Jake Murphy and a great grandchild, Carter Rigsby.

Funeral services will be noon Tuesday at the Coal Grove Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jeff Canfield officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home. The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service. Dennis Workman

Dennis E. Workman, 81, of South Point, formerly of Ashland, Ky., and Jacksonville Beach, Fla., died Monday, June 25, 2012, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. He was the husband of Sandra Hensley Workman, who survives. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Heritage Freewill Baptist Church, 13136 State Route 180, Ashland, KY. Pastor Ed Cook will officiate. Carl Young

Carl Ray “Big Chew” Young, of Raceland, Ky., died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Community Hospice Care Center. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Evans Funeral Home with Dr. Tommy Melvin officiating, Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
