John Markel

John Robert Markel, 62, of Pedro, died in an automobile accident Friday evening. John was born April 15, 1950, the son of the late Robert Markel and Marjorie McCorkle Markel of Pedro. John was a 1968 graduate of Rock Hill High School and served two years in the United States Army. John “Cat” as he is lovingly remembered by his family and many friends was a self-employed contractor and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father Robert and grandparents John and Mary McCorkle and Charles and Tora Markel.

He is survived by his mother; his wife, Lisa; two daughters, Tori Jo and Patti; three sons, Shannon, Shawn and Shane; six grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Sturgill and Mary Jo (Bob) Malone; two brothers, Ricky (Debbie) Markel and Mike (Lana) Markel; four nephews; four nieces and a very special cousin, Vic Sharp, whom he loved dearly. John “Cat” will be greatly missed by all who knew him and appreciated his ability to live life to the fullest.

The Rev. Jessie Sizemore along with Rev. Scott Markel will preside over the services. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at noon Wednesday at the funeral home with burial following at Lawrence Cemetery in Pedro.
