County commission OKs landslide repair contracts

Lawrence County Commission has approved construction agreements worth $600,000 to repair landslides caused by flooding from the spring of 2011.

The repair work will be for landslides on County Road 4 and County Road 15 and will be funded from Federal Highway Administration budget.

“We have two landslides that we got the OK from ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation) to award,” County Engineer Doug Cade said. “We want to get started next week.”

Low bidder for County Road 4 was DGM Inc., at $356,778 and for County Road 15 was Righter Co. Inc., at $245,749.

Commissioners also approved a memorandum of understanding appointing Cade’s office as the prevailing wage coordinator.

“We will do that at no charge through the county engineer’s office,” he said.

County Treasurer Stephen Burcham reported that second half tax collection was approximately $200,000 under last year coming in at approximately $9.7 million.

In other action the commission:

• Approved the agreement for AFSCME Local 890 contract for the dog pound and courthouse maintenance workers;

• Received a study from Alpha Mechanical Service for repair to the HVAC roof unit for the Emergency Management Agency;

• Received a request from County Coroner Kurt Hofmann to increase his budget by between $15,000 to $20,000 to cover an increase in the number of autopsies performed for the county.

• Accepted a bid by McDaniel Electric Inc. for lighting upgrades at the Lawrence County Airport for $261,178.
