FRANKLIN FURNACE — Not even The Beast at Kings Island could match this ride.

In a rollercoaster performance, the Green Bobcats beat the Millersport Lakers 38-26 on Friday.

Green (2-0) built a 26-7 halftime lead, then saw the Lakers get within a touchdown before pulling away for good.

“It was three different games,” said Green coach Dan McDavid. “We started off really well, then they got the momentum and took over, but a couple of our guys stepped up and took control again.”

Rob Applegate had touchdown runs of 6 and 22 yards as Green went up 12-0. Chris Applegate then hit Chris Frazier with a 46-yard scoring pass and it was 18-0.

The Lakers (0-2) scored on a 62-yard run by Alex Blake and it was 18-7, but the Bobcats answered with a 5-yard scoring run by Kyle Frazier and Chris Applegate hit Ryan Gaffney with the conversion pass and it was 26-7 at the half.

Millersport tightened the game on a 68-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Moore and it was 26-13.

Blake’s 4-yard touchdown run got the Lakers within 26-19, but an interception by Andy Chavarria set up a 26-yard scoring run by Frazier and the lead was 32-13.

Frazier added a 29-yard scoring run with 3:37 left to play the clinch the outcome.

Green had 296 yards rushing with Frazier getting 103 yards on eight carries, Rob Applegate had 76 yards on 13 tries and Levi Mollett 70 yards on seven attempts.

“We ran the ball pretty well and we came up with some big plays,” said McDavid.

A lot of Green’s problems — mostly on the defensive side — could be attributed to injuries. However, the Bocats got some key performances.

Kaden Sampson had eight tackles, Frazier five tackles and a fumble recovery, Mark Martin six tackles and a fumble recovery and Rob Applegate nine tackles. Clay Applegate, Gaffney and Chavarria all had interceptions.

“I didn’t like our defensive effort, but we had a lot of people out of positions because of injuries,” said McDavid.
