It took a while before those 5-hour energy drinks kicked in.

After a sluggish first half, the St. Joseph Flyers outscored the Chesapeake Panthers 4-0 in the second half to post a 6-2 win on Tuesday.

“We had difficulty sustaining possession in the first period and our defense kept us in the game,” said Flyers’ coach Tim Hopkins.

“We began the second period with a lot of energy and connected our passes well.”

Joseph Payton — who finished with a hat trick — scored the first goal from 8 yards with 2:54 on the clock to put the Flyers ahead.

But the Panthers got a penalty kick from Sawyeer Stephens and a goal by Logan McCloud at the 24:44 mark to take a 2-1 lead.

St. Joseph tied the game when Payton scored from 10 yards out at the 36:00 mark.

The Flyers then took over in the second half starting with a goal by Eli Lewis from 12 yards with 5:06 showing on the clock.

Cole Willis scored three minutes later from 13 yards and Payton completed the hat trick with his third goal at the 19:56 mark.

Lewis added his second goal with 25:02 on the slcok from 14 yards out to cap the scoring.

The Flyers’ goalie Justin Mahlmeister had five saves. St. Joseph had 20 shots on goal to just seven for the Panthers.

The Flyers played South Point Thursday and entertain Piketon at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
