COAL GROVE — Coal Grove’s players had their track shoes on, amassing 332 yards on the ground en route to a 62-7 win over the Rock Hill Redmen.

The Hornets (2-3, 1-0) got on the scoreboard quick when Alex Bare took the opening kickoff of the game 80 yards for a touchdown. Kyle Estep added the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 just 13 seconds into the game.

After a Rock Hill punt on their opening possession, Coal Grove slowed a bit going 66 yards in nine plays capped by a 7-yard run by Bare. Estep added the two-point conversion to make the score 16-0 with 4:46 to go in the first.

Coal Grove increased its lead on the first play of the second quarter when Brandon Hogsten capped a 5-play, 78-yard drive with a 3-yard run. Isaiah Gunther added the extra point to make the score 23-0 early in the second quarter.

The Hornets extended their lead to 37-0 at halftime on two Isaiah Gunther touchdown runs of 7 yards and 1-yard.

After a Rock Hill (0-6, 0-1) punt to open the second half, the Hornets added to the lead when Hogsten found the end zone from 8 yards out. The extra point was no good, and the score was 43-0 midway through the third.

The Redmen looked to get on the scoreboard on the first play of their next possession when Jonah Cox found a seam and raced for a gain of 36 yards down to the Coal Grove 5.

However, the Hornets’ defense held and forced a fourth down and Rock Hill quarterback Gabe Marzicola’s pass was deflected and intercepted by Coal Grove’s Kyle Estep, who returned it 52 yards.

Seven plays later, Jesse Rigsby found the end zone to increase the lead to 50-0 at the end of the third quarter.

After forcing a Rock Hill punt early in the fourth, Coal Grove extended the lead when Rigsby found Lucas Campbell open behind the secondary for a 42-yard touchdown strike.

The touchdown pass capped a 5-play, 53-yard drive and made the score 56-0 with 7:29 to go in the fourth.

On the second play of the ensuing possession, Coal Grove’s Trevor Barrett got pressure on Marzicola, intercepted the pass, and raced 44 yards to the end zone to extend the lead to 62-0 with 6:31 remaining in the game.

Rock Hill put together a long drive of its own, and Jordan Blagg capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Bryce Krum added the extra point to set the final score of 62-7.

Both teams continue OVC play next week as Rock Hill travels to South Point and Coal Grove hosts River Valley.
