It’s week nine of the high school football season which means the postseason playoff picture will start to come into focus.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers have lost three straight but their five wins were more than enough to clinch a playoff berth.

Heading into week nine the Fighting Tigers are second in Region 15 of Division IV with a 16.2375 average. A win Friday over Oak Hill could secure a home game.

St. Clairsville (8-0) continues to lead the region at 21.4847.

Sitting third is Minford (7-1) with a 12.6 average followed by Johnstown-Monroe (6-2) at 11.4, Piketon (6-2) at 10.9875, Indian Valley (4-4) at 8.1831, Martins Ferry (5-3) at 8.05 and Harrison Central (5-3) at 7.9250.

Chesapeake (4-4) at 6.3674 dropped to No. 11. The Panthers need a win over Coal Grove this week to keep their playoff hopes alive.

As it stands, St. Clairsville, Ironton, Minford, Johnstown-Monroe and Piketon should qualify. The rest of the region is up for grabs.

Indian Valley is expected to qualify but their game with Tuslaw this week is a toss-up. They should beat Tuscarawas Valley next week.

Martins Ferry figures to lose to St. Clairsville this week and has its rivalry with Bellaire next week and may be the underdog.

Zane Trace will probably lose to Unioto this week and closes with 1-7 Southeastern. Harrison Central should win its final two games against Union Local and Buckeye Local.

Unioto may win this week but will be an underdog against Paint Valley. Amanda Clearcreek still has a chance. The Aces will be favored against Bloom-Carroll (3-5) and Logan Elm (4-4).

Oak Hill leads Region 19 of Division V with a 13.8375 average. But the Oaks need a win over Ironton to remain at the top of the region because their final game is against Div. VI Green (3-5).

Coal Grove (4-3) climbed to No. 12 in the region with a 5.8889 average. The Hornets must win their final two games and get plenty of help.

In Region 23 of Division VI, Symmes Valley (6-2) stayed at No. 6 with an 8.6875 average. The Vikings should qualify for the postseason but have two big point games ahead that will determine if they make the postseason and possibly host a first-round home game.

The Vikings play at Portsmouth Notre Dame (6-2) on Saturday. The Titans have an 8.1750 average and sit one spot behind the Vikings. They can make the postseason with a win over the Vikings or over Sciotoville East next week.

Symmes Valley ends the season against Buffalo, W.Va., who is 6-1 and is ranked No. 4 in the West Virginia Class A poll.

Newark Catholic (7-1) continues to lead the region with a 15.0250 average. The Green Wave have clinched a playoff spot along with No. Danville (7-1) who has a 14.8251 average.

Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans (7-1) sits third at 14.0025 and Trimble (7-1) at 10.5625 is fourth. All should qualify along with No. 5 Colonel Crawford (6-2) that has a 9.1375 average.

Fairfield Christian, Hannibal River and Reedsville Eastern are fighting for that final playoff spot.
