COAL GROVE — Police in Coal Grove are still searching for a village-owned vehicle that was stolen more than a week ago.

The vehicle, a 2008 blue, two-door Chevrolet Cavalier, was stolen at about 10 p.m. Oct. 12. Coal Grove Police Chief Eric Spurlock said the keys had been left in the ignition and the car was running when it was taken from the driveway of a village water department worker.

Mayor Larry McDaniel said the worker who was driving the vehicle was on the evening shift ending at midnight.

Spurlock said a village worker had driven the vehicle to another village worker’s home on Lane Street and, when the two were out of sight of the car, someone drove away in it. Spurlock said the village workers alleged they did not hear the car drive away. When they realized it was gone, they walked up the street to search for it.

According to a police report, a neighbor alleged an African American male about 5-foot-6-inches tall wearing a gray shirt and green pants knocked on her door and asked to use her phone to contact a ride. The women said after she let the man use her phone, she noticed headlights in her back yard and saw the vehicle that belonged to the village drive away.

Spurlock said the village workers alleged when the car came around the corner back onto Lane Street, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed and tried to run them over.

Spurlock said there are no leads on the vehicle at this time and it has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system.
