Markins, Adkins spark Hornets’ win over Raiders

BIDWELL — One bad apple didn’t spoil the bunch for the Coal Grove Hornets.
Despite scoring only 2 points in the second quarter, the Hornets recovered and whipped the River Valley Raiders 53-36 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Conor Markins scored 19 points including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Brandon Adkins had 16 points for Coal Grove (7-2, 2-1).
Ethan Dovenbarger scored 12 points for River Valley.
Markins had a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the first quarter to help stake Coal Grove to a 14-6 lead.
But Kyle Estep’s basket was the only points Coal Grove scored in the second quarter as River Valley took a 17-16 halftime lead.
But the Hornets outscored the Raiders 19-5 in the third quarter to go up 35-22. Adkins scored 6 points and Alex Bare had 5 points including a 3-pointer to ignite the Hornets’ offense.
Adkins had 8 points and Markins 6 points in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove extended its lead.
Dovenbarger scored 5 points in the fourth quarter.
