JACKSON — Forget putting a lid on the baskets. These had child proof caps.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets couldn’t get a shot to drop as they shot 23 percent and lost 54-35 to the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians Wednesday in the Division III sectional tournament semifinals.

Coal Grove made just 14 of 60 field goal attempts including 3 of 21 from the 3-point line. Adding to their woes was a 4 of 15 shooting from the foul line.

“(Ashley) Adkins made some shots early but that was it. Tonight it was rough. No one could make anything,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

Adkins had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals to lead Coal Grove (14-9). Jacy Jones added 9 points while Morgan Sites and Taylor Fleming grabbed 6 rebounds each.

Lucasville was led by Bethany Conley with 16 points, McKenzie Coriell scored 14 and Lexie Doddridge had 12 points.

Coal Grove led twice in the first quarter. A 15-footer by Darrien Hankins and a layup by Adkins put the Lady Hornets ahead 4-3.

Valley came back to take a 10-4 lead, but Adkins made a layup and a 3-pointer and Jacy Jones drained an 18-footer to make it 11-10 with 17 seconds on the clock.

A 3-pointer by Coriell gave the Lady Indians a 13-11 lead at the end of the quarter.

Coal Grove was 5 of 10 from the field in the first quarter. It changed in the second quarter when the Lady Hornets were only 3 of 16.

A trifecta by Adkins got Coal Grove within 20-19 with 3:57 left in the half. Valley went on a 6-0 run and led 26-20 at the half.

Jones made a layup at the 7:02 mark of the third quarter and Coal Grove trailed 28-22. But the Lady Hornets would get no closer.

Coriell scored 4 points and Conley converted a 3-point play and it was 38-22 at the 3:32 mark. The lead was 45-25 at the end of the quarter as Taylor Skaggs converted a 3-point play with four seconds on the clock.

The Lady Indians biggest lead was 51-29 with 5:08 left after two foul shots by Doddridge.

Lucasville Valley plays Ironton at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the sectional finals.
