Evelyn Higgins

Nov. 19, 1919-March 13, 2013

Evelyn Ruth Higgins, 93, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Sunset Nursing Home.  The Ironton native was born Nov. 19, 1919, a daughter to the late, Ray and Minnie (Cablish) Whaley.  Evelyn was also preceded in death by her husband, James Higgins.

Evelyn was a graduate of Ironton High School.  She went on to work and eventually retired from the Ironton Welfare Department.  Evelyn was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ironton.

Evelyn is survived by a sister, Margaret Johnson of Ironton; two brothers, Robert (Ruth) Whaley of Proctorville and Thomas (Marie) Whaley of Ironton; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn is preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Whaley

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Woodland Cemetery with Dr. Wayne Young officiating. Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carol Lewis

July 26, 1944-March 15, 2013

Carol Ann Greene Lewis, 68, of Ironton, passed away Friday, March, 15, 2013, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. after a secret battle with cancer.  The Wilmington native was born July, 26, 1944, a daughter to the late Donald and Mary Catherine (Branstrator) Greene.

Carol was a 1962 graduate of Wilmington High School. She went on to earn her associate’s degree and RN certification in nursing from Ohio University. Carol later worked as head pediatrics nurse at Lawrence County General Hospital in Ironton. Carol is of the Lutheran faith. Carol is survived by a son, Michael (Amy) Lewis of Bolingbrook, Ill.; a daughter, Elaine (Darren) Richardson of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister: Martha (Mike) Insko of Maysville, Ky.; and seven grandchildren, Autumn Leasure and (Justin Cottrell) of Louisville, Ky., Derek Leasure of Cincinnati, Kara Simons and Zade Richardson both of Cincinnati; Austin Lewis; Zachary Lewis; and Dylan Lewis, all of Bolingbrook.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Greene; and a niece, Melanie Greene. A funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Tracy Brammer – Monroe Funeral Home with Pastor David Ritchie officiating.  A private burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Springfield. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. until the time of service. A potluck dinner will follow at the funeral home and is welcome to all from 4:45 through 6 p.m.  If you are able to bring anything in a disposable dish to share, we appreciate your support.

 

William Yates

Aug. 19, 1941-March 15, 2013

William Ray “Wild Bill” Yates, 71 of Ironton, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at his residence. The Lawrence County,native was born Aug. 19, 1941, the son of the late Rufus “Red” and Edith Pearl Matthews Yates. He is survived by his wife Sandra Callicoat Yates.

Mr. Yates attended Waterloo schools.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Junior Yates and Wetzel Yates; a nephew, Rick Butler; two cousins, Lee Yates and Rowdy Yates; and a niece, Paula Yates.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Gene Butler of Coal Grove; two sons, Roger Yates and Mark “ Bub” Yates, both of Ironton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tina and Greg Massie of Ironton and Gayle Yates; seven grandchildren, Crystal and Shawn Hanshaw, Tricia Yates, Ashley Yates, Greggie Massie, Ethan McKnight, Kaylee Yates, and Ricky Yates;

three great grandchildren; a special friend and caregiver, Edward “Edgar” Hampton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Calvin Peters

Calvin Coolidge Peters, 88, of Flatwoods, Ky. died at home on Thursday, March 14, 2013. He was the husband of Rose M. Bentley-Peters, who survives. Funeral services will be at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods at 1 p.m. today with visiting hours from 11am until service time on Sunday. Burial will follow at Davidson Memorial Gardens on U.S. 23 in Floyd County, Ky.

James Journell

James W. Journell, 61, of Proctorville, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was the wife of Jill Journell, who survives.
