KENTON — Alex Bare came away as a state champion. His Coal Grove Hornets’ teammates followed suit.

Bare was an individual champion and the Hornets won the Division I, II and III state powerlifting title in the meet held at Kenton High School.

A total of 34 lifters helped the Hornets amass 13,375 pounds. Northwest was next with 12,855, Shawnee 12,000 and Gallipolis was fourth at 11.490.

Bare led the Hornets team as he claimed the 145-pound class state title with 1,060 total pounds.

It was Bare’s second state powerlifting title — he also won as a sophomore — and helped the Hornets win their seventh state title in eight years.

Bare had a 225 bench, 405 squat and 430 deadlift to beat the runner-up by 80 pounds. The title gave him All-Ohio honors in football, basketball, track and powerlifting.

To add to his list of credits, Bare scored 15 points on Monday in the coaches District 13 All-Star Game and was named the most valuable player as Division III-IV beat the Division I-II seniors 96-77.

Ironton was represented by just two powerlifters, but both came away with state championships.

Drew Wells won the 175-pound class in the Divisions IV, V and VI meet with 1,285 total pounds.

Wells had a bench press of 275 pounds, a 485 deadlift and a 525 squat to win by 85 pounds.

Austin Rowe claimed first place in the 185-pound class that included a state record in the squat.

Rowe’s record squat was 675 pounds and added to his 250 bench and 490 deadlift giving him a 1,415 weight total, 95 pounds ahead of the runner-up.

Symmes Valley’s Cory Thacker won in the 125-pound class and Tyler Celski claimed the 250-pound class in the Divisions IV, V and VI meet.

Thacker had 835 pounds with a 195 bench, 300 squat and 340 deadlift. Celeski racked up 1,335 pounds with a 335 bench, 550 squat and 450 deadlift.

The Vikings had only three lifters participate.

Here are the results of other area lifters (weight class, place, lifter, school, bench press, squat, deadlift):
