Reds roll past Cubs
in exhibition play
MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Johnny Cueto pitched six shutout innings in a smooth warmup for opening day and Todd Fraizer homered to send the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija also had a good night in his final outing before the season opener. He gave up one run and five hits in five innings, striking out five.
Cueto had a hit in the third inning and scored on a double by Emmanuel Burriss.
Chicago closer Carlos Marmol had his worst outing of the spring and was booed by the crowd at HoHoKam Stadium. He allowed six runs — four earned — on four hits and a walk without getting an out, snapping his scoreless streak at 6 2-3 innings.
Yankees, Angels
finalize Wells’ trade
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The trade sending outfielder Vernon Wells from the Los Angeles Angels to the New York Yankees has been finalized.
New York dealt a pair of minor leaguers to the Angels on Tuesday for Wells: outfielder Exircado Cayones and left-hander Kramer Sneed. The Angels will pay about $28.5 million of the $42 million Wells is owed over the final two seasons of his contract.
The Yankees will pay most of his salary this year, a move designed to help the Angels to stay under the luxury tax threshold of $178 million. Los Angeles will pay most of his salary in 2014, when the Yankees hope to get under the threshold as it rises to $189 million.
Hurricanes’ Johnson
out of regionals
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says Miami center Reggie Johnson had a minor surgical procedure in one of his knees Tuesday and will not play in this weekend’s East Regional games.
The person says Johnson did not accompany the Hurricanes to Washington on Tuesday evening but is expected to be able to play in the Final Four if Miami advances. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not publicly revealed the injury.
ESPN to award
Roberts’ courage
NEW YORK (AP) — ESPN is staying in the family in giving its Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Robin Roberts at its annual ESPY awards this summer.
The “Good Morning America” anchor is being saluted for how she kept viewers involved in her treatments for two serious illnesses. She had breast cancer in 2007 and last year had to undergo a bone marrow transplant to treat a rare blood disorder. Roberts returned to “Good Morning America” last month.
Roberts came to sister company ABC from ESPN, where she was the network’s first black female sportscaster.
