Dr. Alvis Brown
Dec. 30, 1931 – March 27, 2013
Dr. Alvis Brown, 81, of Bronston, Ky., went to be with the Lord Wednesday March 27, 2013 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.. The Louisa, Ky., native was born December 30, 1931, a son of the late John and Sarah Varney Brown. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Leona Cox Brown.
Dr. Brown was a 1950 graduate of C-K High School. He attended Marshall University, and Ohio State University where he earned his PhD. His first teaching job was at Thomas Brown High School in Cattletsburg, Ky. He was an assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Marshall, and later served as a guidance counselor at Ironton High School. He also taught at Frostburg State College, Md., Westminster College, Pa., and Somerset Community College, Somerset, Ky., where he was a professor and dean. He attended Parkers Mill Baptist Church in Somerset, Ky.
He was also preceded in death by eight brothers, Elmer, Alfred, Clarence, Lawrence, Claude, Clyde, Clinton and Clifford Brown.
He is survived by, son and daughter-in-law, John and Dana Brown of Flatwoods, Ky.; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Mike Williams of Somerset, Ky.; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Lisa Brown of Ironton Sister, Muriel Salyers of Ceredo, W.Va.; mother-in-law, Letha Cox of Ironton; sister-in-law, Thelma Ross-Ervin of Ironton and 13 grandchildren, Sarah, Sammy, Shyler, Jacob, Davis, Allison, Alan, Kasey, Chad, Jessica, Justin, Josh and Alissa.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 South 7th Street Ironton, with Minister Jimmy Tingler officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Orville Haas
Orville Sonny Haas, 74, of Kitts Hill, died Sunday, March 31, 2013, at a local healthcare center. Arrangements are pending with Phillips Funeral Home.
Ramona Ray
Ramona Ray, 70, of Chesapeake, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, at the Hospice House of Huntington, W.Va. She is survived by her husband Jackie Ray. Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, is in charge of arrangements.
Amellia Abrams
Amellia Abrams, 55, of Pedro, died Sunday, March 31, 2013, at the Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Ky. Arrangements are pending with Phillips Funeral Home.
