AID — Any win is a good win. Just ask the Symmes Valley Vikings.

In two displays of offense, the Vikings beat the Western Indians 14-2 on Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game and then outscored the Chesapeake Panthers 11-10 on Tuesday in a non-league game.

“It’s always good to go on the road and get a win, especially a league win,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

“We’ve been playing some good teams to start the season, so it was good to have a game where we could get a big lead and just relax.”

Symmes Valley (1-1, 1-0) erupted for 10 runs in the first inning as they cruised past Western.

Tanner Mays went 4-for-4 with a double to key the Vikings’ 14-hit attack. D.J. Miller was 2-3 and Alec Herrell 2-4 with a double in the win. Seth Jarrell added a double.

Jonathan Kouns, the second of three pitchers, got the win.

On Tuesday, the Vikings had 14 hits led by Herrell who went 3-4 with two doubles and Mays who also went 3-4.

Pitcher Dylan McFann went 6.2 innings to get the win. He struck out nine and walked just one. He gave up all 10 runs, but only six were earned.

Mays came on to strike out the final batter secure the win and pick up the save.

“Chesapeake is a really good, young team,” said Renfroe. “I thought McFann threw a good game. He’s just a sophomore and he just threw strikes.”

The Panthers banged out 15 hits with Jacob Henson going 4-5. Brett Curry was 3-4, Mikey Walters 2-3 and Blake Lester and Joe Bias 2-4.
