Brazilian quintet to perform at OUS Saturday

Ohio University Southern continues its goal of bringing multicultural music to Ironton by inviting Minas, a Philadelphia-based Brazilian quintet with vocalist, to perform at the Rotunda.

The event is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public, with OU student being admitted free by showing valid student ID.

Minas draws from Brazilian traditions of samba and bossa nova as well as American jazz and blues to create a warm and sophisticated blend, according to a press release. The group has performed at the Lincoln Center in New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and multiple major Philadelphia venues, the release stated.

The core of Minas are the voices of husband and wife duo, Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, the release stated. Haddad, a native of Brazil, and King formed the group in 1978.

The ensemble’s rich instrumental harmonies, creative solos and complex layers of percussion will provide an evening of uplifting and sophisticated music for all to enjoy, the release stated.

Haddad and King will be joined by Adriano Santos on drums, Jim Stager on bass, Brazilian percussionist Ze Mauricio and Mike Cemprola on saxophone and flute.
