Pointers rout Raiders in 5 innings

SOUTH POINT — A good week had a big finish.

The South Point Pointers capped a 4-1 week with an 11-1 Ohio Valley Conference win over the River Valley Raiders in five innings on Friday.

“We had a good week overall. We came out of a long week by winning four game and losing a tight one to Rock Hill,” said Pointers’ coach Marty Patrick.

“Despite the loss, I think this team can control their own destiny. They are capable of winning at any given time when they play as a team.”

Brandon Boggs pitched a two-hitter for the win. He struck out 11 and walked two. He also went 2-3 at the plate with a double.

Alex White and Josh Browning also went 2-3 as the Pointers had 10 hits.

The Pointers (5-3, 3-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Boggs and Larry Brandon’s base hit.

The Raiders (2-9, 1-4) got their only run in the second, but South Point took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the inning. Trey Kearns walked, stole second and scored on Luke Kelley’s base hit.

After a scoreless third, the Pointers erupted for nine runs in the fourth as 13 batters went to the plate.

Browning singled, Kearns and Kelley walked and Patrick Jones doubled for a run. Austin Majher and Boggs had RBI singles and Whitt doubled in another.

Brandon reached on a fielder’s choice, Chris Woodard walked and Browning and Kearns delivered RBI singles.
