Dragons notch road win at River Valley
BIDWELL — Road games always seem to be the hardest.
Fairland had road worries for three innings before the Dragons scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to beat the River Valley Raiders 9-4 on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We always have tough games up there, so it’s nice to come out with a win on the road,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward.
The win makes Fairland 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the OVC. It also sets up a showdown against Rock Hill at home on Wednesday.
Matt Aliff went six innings for the win and Kyle Raines finished up. Aliff struck out eight, walked two, hit three, gave up six his and all four runs. Raines struck out three and walked two in an inning of work.
River Valley led 2-0 after two innings. Fairland cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third when Aliff singled, Josh Ross and Brandon Burcham walked and Raines hit a sacrifice fly.
The Dragons took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
Dylan Murphy was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a throwing error. Kyle Sowards then reached on an error, Aliff doubled, Ross was hit by a pitch and Burcahm had a two-run single.
The Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the inning but Fairland took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.
Raines singled, Collin Damron doubled and Murphy had a two-run single.
The Dragons got three insurance runs in the sixth.
Aliff walked, Ross was safe on an error and Burcham had an RBI single. Raines hit into a fielder’s choice and Murphy reached on a throwing error as two runs scored.
Burcham went 2-3 with three RBIs. Aliff and Raines were 2-4.
