BURLINGTON — Making sure children have a good nutritious lunch during the summer holidays is the goal of the upcoming Summer Food Service Program.
The lunch program starts Monday and runs through Aug. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the Burlington Commons Park overlooking the Ohio River.
“Some of these children come from households that are low income,” said Barbara Carter, a volunteer who worked on the program last year.
“It was an enjoyable time for the children to come together. There were nutritious meals with fruits and vegetables.”
Children 18 years and younger are eligible for the lunches as are individuals with disabilities up to the age of 21.
“Those who came (last year) enjoyed it,” Carter said. “It was very successful.”
Also volunteering last summer was Tamara Jones, who said the youngsters who participated were appreciative of the meals.
“We do have a lot of kids in the summer who don’t get a lunch,” Jones said. “And on Friday there is a backpack lunch to get the kids through Saturday and Sunday.”
Sponsor for the program is the Community Action Organization in Scioto County.
Those seeking more information can contact Carter at (740) 894-3197 or Jones at (740) 547-6395.
In case of rain or bad weather, the lunches will be served at First Baptist Church of Burlington on County Road 1, two blocks from the park.
