County can’t afford

Bengals’ scoreboard

CINCINNATI (AP) — Officials in Hamilton County say it doesn’t have the $10 million needed to buy a high-definition scoreboard due under the Cincinnati Bengals’ stadium lease with the county.

Bengals director of business development Bob Bedinghaus tells The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/1dr7hzD ) it’s time to consider the issue. But the team hasn’t requested it yet and acknowledges county budget concerns.

The Bengals’ lease calls for taxpayers to fund new technology requested by the team for county-owned Paul Brown Stadium if at least 14 other NFL stadiums have the same technology. The Enquirer reports 21 teams have high-definition scoreboards, and more are getting them.

Commissioners say the county can’t afford that price tag this year, but the project might be feasible under an extended timetable or if the Bengals cover part of the cost.

UK-Louisville game to end season in 2014

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville’s annual September showdown with Kentucky will now be a season-ending rivalry game starting next year.

The school on Wednesday announced an agreement between Kentucky that shifts the intrastate matchup to the regular season’s final weekend. Louisville will host the 2014 game on Nov. 29.

Scheduling adjustments caused by expansion of the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences to 14 teams — the latter of which includes Louisville, which joins next season — resulted in the move that will now make the Cardinals-Wildcats contest one of four in-state rivalry games between the leagues.

Kentucky leads the series 14-11 but is 8-11 against Louisville since it resumed in 1994 after a 70-year break. The Wildcats will host the ninth-ranked Cardinals in the Governor’s Cup game on Sept. 14 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Pitch breaks jaw of Braves’ OF Heyward

NEW YORK (AP) — Braves outfielder Jason Heyward sustained two jaw fractures when he was struck by a pitch and will undergo surgery on Thursday.

The Braves said that Heyward’s jaw has been stabilized, and he was to return to Atlanta on Wednesday night in advance of the operation. The team will announce how long Heyward will be sidelined after surgery is completed.

Heyward was beaned by a 90 mph fastball from New York Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese in the sixth inning of the Braves’ 4-1, 10-inning win on Wednesday. The impact made a loud noise, and the crowd groaned as Heyward crumpled to the ground.

Browns aware of players’ violations

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns say they are aware of driving violations committed by wide receivers Greg Little and Josh Gordon.

Little was recently ticketed for two speeding citations, one for which he admitted to driving 127 mph and losing control of his vehicle. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to WOIO-TV that Little was fined $350 for the single-car accident in April. Little hit a guardrail, knocked down a light pole and left 40 yards of brake tracks.

On Monday, Little was stopped for speeding and expired license plates. Gordon was cited for driving 98 mph in a 60 mph zone.

The Browns called the player’s driving records “unacceptable” and said they have spoken to both Little and Gordon. The Browns plan to “address the issue with the entire team.”

The attorney for both players said the matters are being resolved.
