ROME TOWNSHIP — Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies are on the lookout for suspects involved in several smash-and-grab style crimes in Proctorville and Rome Township.

In the early morning hours Tuesday, six businesses were broken into on County Road 107 and 403 — Little Tenampa, Star Exxon Station, Valvoline Express Care, Dairy Queen, Subway and U-Tan.

The businesses were entered through either broken windows or broken glass doors.

At about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to an alarm activation at the Dairy Queen in the 100 block of County Road 403. Subway and U-Tan are also in the same shopping center. An alarm was also activated at Subway. Entry was not gained at U-Tan as only one layer of glass was broken.

According to reports from the sheriff’s office, the manager of Dairy Queen said nothing appeared to have been taken, although cash registers had been pried open. The safe was still intact, the report stated.

A surveillance video at the ice cream shop showed a male wearing a dark jacket and hooded sweatshirt entering the business through the broken window.

At Subway, the safe was opened as well as the cash register. According to the report, about $1,200 was taken from the safe and about $180 was taken from the register.

Subway was also broken into in July. The front door glass was broken and about $200 in cash was taken.

In the 7000 and 8000 block of County Road 107, Little Tenampa, Star Exxon Station and Valvoline Express Care were also broken into, managers and employees found out Tuesday morning before opening.

A cash register was taken from Little Tenampa; about 15 cartons of cigarettes from the Exxon; and about $20 in coins were taken from Valvoline Express Care.

The manager of Little Tenampa said the restaurant was also broken into last week but was not reported to the sheriff’s office.

On Aug. 13, the Rome Cemetery office was broken into and ransacked.
