Joseph Freeman

Joseph “Joe” Melvin Freeman, 78, of Ironton, went to be with Our Lord Savior Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Joe was born May 13, 1935, in Kayford, W.Va., the son of the late Howard and Barbara Freeman.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the Ironton Fire Department. Joe was also a retiree from Scherman Trucking Company and Ace Doran Trucking Company. He was a proud and dedicated member of the VFW Post 8850 Honor Guard. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by infant daughter Carolyn Sue; son, Harold; and sisters, Bobbie Sue Deaver, Carmella (Sis) Abbot, Shirley Potter and Betty Lowder Gandy.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Ann (Kline) Freeman. They spent 50 wonderful years together.

Together they have five children, Joanie Freeman Igo, Laurie Freeman and her companion Gary Saylor, Beth (Steve) Campbell, Joseph “Mike” (Heather) Freeman and Sheila Freeman and her companion Brent Dillow. He had four granddaughters, five grandsons, three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson.

He also was the loving father of Bill (Patty) Freeman, Pam Freeman, Rick (Mary) Freeman, Patty (Roger) Shope, Janet Cremeans, Glen-Ray (Kathy) Freeman and David (Viki) Freeman. There are 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by one sister, Nancy (Jack) Pistle of Portsmouth; one brother, Burman (Bubs) Freeman, of Albany, Ga.; and a special friend, Gary Collins.

Joe was a devoted tiger fan who looked forward to selling split-the-pot tickets at each home football game at the rear gate. Joe was a very loving man who never met a stranger. He loved his family dearly and was very proud to be a husband, father and grandfather.

Although Joe had battled illness off and on in his last month, he was never satisfied or happy until his return home on Friday morning, Sept. 27. He spent that beautiful day with his wife, Ann, and family.

Visitation is from 6 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home with rosary at 8:30 p.m. A Christian Burial Mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Shayne Price, Jeromy McGraw, Andy Hannan, Brent Dillow, grandsons Gregory Igo II, Kevin Freeman, Ricky Freeman and Scottie Cremeans.

Vickie Simpson

Vickie Lynn Simpson, 61, of Kitts Hill, passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013. The Ironton native was born Aug. 24, 1952, a daughter of the late Hubert and Margaret Saunders Callicoat.

Vickie was a graduate of Symmes Valley High School and Ohio University. She retired after 20 years as a teacher for the Symmes Valley School District and was a member of the Linnville United Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Fout.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gary David Simpson, whom she married July 7, 1969; daughter and son-in-law, Marcie and Danny Quigley of Martinsville; daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Brett Waggoner of Spring Hill, Fla.; seven grandchildren; Greta and J.D. Quigley of Martinsville, Lucy, Garrick and Samuel Waggoner of Spring Hill, Fla., J.J. Huff of Willow Wood, Bethany Corn of Scottown; two great-grandchildren, Rocky Huff of Willow Wood and Adalyn Corn of Scottown; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Wanda Callicoat of Willow Wood; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Ester Callicoat of Willow Wood; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra Fern Yates of Ironton; brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Connie Callicoat of Scottown; sister and brother-in-law, Toni and Kevin Ferguson of Willow Wood; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Jesse Sizemore and Jeremy Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Old Baptist Cemetery. Harold Boley

Harold Edward Boley, 97, of South Point, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home with Pastor Kenny Estep officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point.
