Edith Ross
Edith Louise Ross, 97, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at a local health care facility. The Ironton native was born March 16, 1916, the daughter of the late Monroe and Gertrude Turvey McDaniel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Ross, who passed away in 1972.
Mrs. Ross was a graduate of Ironton High School, and was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of nursing in Huntington, W.Va. She retired from the Lawrence County Gerneral Hospital in 1978 and was a charter member of the Elm Street Nazarene Church in Ironton.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Shore, Nellie Moore and Ruth Labor; a sister-in-law, Christine Ross; a niece, Karen Labor Sherman; two nephews, Ronald Labor and Danny Shore.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Tom Rosebrough of Jackson, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Chris Rosebrough, of Asheville, N.C., and Tim Rosebrough, of Medina, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Andi Faye Rosebrough, of Medina, Tenn., and Elijah Thomas Rosebrough, of Asheville, N.C.; a niece, Pat Compliment and her husband, Jim, of Coal Grove; two nephews, Mike Labor, of South Carolina, and Robert Moore, of Ironton; numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be noon today at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point with Pastor Scott Mann officiating. There will be no public visitation. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.
Charles Horner
Charles Horner, Jr. 68, of Coal Grove, Ohio passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at a local health care facility. The Soldier, Ky., native was born Feb. 1, 1945, the son of the late Charles and Christine Fraley Horner.
Charles attended Green High School and was a former machinist for the Warner Sheet Metal Company in Columbus. He loved working on cars, fishing and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma Sprouse, Betty Horner, Cora Horn, Bertha Brown and an infant sister, Christine Horner, and two brothers, Homer Horner and David Horner.
He is survived by two sons, James Horner, of Kitts Hill, and Michael Wilson, of Columbus; three brothers, Jerry Horner and Clarence Horner, both of Ohio Furnace, and Paul Horner, of Ironton; a close nephew, George Munion, of Ironton; a special friend, Vada Wilson, of Coal Grove; and friend, Wilma Daniels, of Columbus.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Cremeans officiating. Burial will follow in Buckeye Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Ryan Munion, Tom Munion, Jeff Munion Jr., George Munion and John Ackison. Emmett Walker
Emmett Edward Walker, 86, died Nov. 3, 2013, in Columbus. He was born Aug. 30, 1927, in Ironton, the son of the late Margret Gentil Walker. He is survived by his wife, Rose (Lutz) Walker, who he married Nov. 6, 1950, at St. Lawrence Church in Ironton.
He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School and a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Marine Corps in China. He was employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was retired from the Federal Corrections Institute in Summit, Ky. He was also the operator of a Walker Construction Company.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Joseph Walker; brothers Charles, Paul (Mary) and Clarence (Rosemary); and a son-in-law, Loren Hipsley.
He is survived by five daughters, Barbara (Robert) Shea, of Columbus, Susan Walker, of Columbus, Jennifer Hipsley, of Columbus, Anne Walker, of Columbus, and Janet (Keith) Niles, of Enon; and five sons, James (Treva) Walker, of Ironton, David (Noelene) Walker, of Columbus, Shawn (Sarah) Walker, of Ironton, Terence (Jeannie) Walker, of Destin, Fla., and Robert Walker, of Las Vegas, Nev. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home. Rosary recitation will be at 8:30 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Fr. Kevin Lutz, his nephew, as celebrant, and Fr. David Huffman. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pine Grove.
Freta Thompson
Freta Lois Thompson, 79, of Chesapeake, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville.
