Panthers’ defense shuts down Gallia

GALLIPOLIS — This one was about the defense.
Chesapeake held Gallipolis to single digit scoring in three quarters as the Panthers rolled past the Blue Devils 62-31 Saturday.
Gage Rhoades scored 24 points including four 3-pointers as Chesapeake improved to 2-1.
Caleb Heffner and Andrew Saunders added 8 points each. Saunders also had 10 rebounds, Brad Meadows 6 and Heffner 5.
Rhoades scored 7 points in the first quarter and Heffner added 4 more as Chesapeake took a 12-4 lead.
The Panthers held Gallipolis without a field goal until Devin Henry hit a basket with 12 seconds on the clock.
Rhoades hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter and scored 8 points as the lead grew to 30-12 at the half.
Saunders scored all 8 of his points in the third quarter and Rhoades had 7 more as Chesapeake built an insurmountable 51-16 lead.
The Panthers emptied the bench in the fourth quarter leading to eight of their 14 turnovers.
Michael Putney scored 10 points for Gallipolis (1-2).
