Veterans program essential

For a few holidays out of the year, we laud veterans as heroes for their bravery, sacrifice and devotion to country — Veterans Day and Memorial Day come to mind.

So why is it that so many veterans in our country, and right here in our own community don’t know where their next meal will come from?

To address that issue and many others that homeless or at-risk veterans are facing, the Workforce Development Resource Center is offering an assistance program to help those veterans transition back into society.

Although there is a VA outreach center in Huntington, W.Va., where veterans can take a shower or get a meal, for Lawrence County’s veterans in need, that journey could be too far for someone struggling with homelessness.

In times of war, our military service men and women are called to where they are needed most.

Through the WDRC’s program, assistance can be brought to the veterans.

As we all know, sometimes it is not always easy to ask for help, even when it is needed most. So if you know a veteran who needs help with finding a job or a home, seeking medical care or any other type of counseling, encourage them to talk to someone at the WDRC.

It is the very least we can do to make sure our soldiers can live the kind of life they have fought so hard to protect.
