They were nicknamed “The Fabulous Female Flyers,” and with good reason.
Coached by B.J. Hannon, the St. Joseph Female Flyers’ team dominated area girls’ basketball from 1972-76 as they posted an amazing 46-2 record and advanced to the Class A regional tournament where they lost to Lancaster Fisher Catholic and fell just one game shy of the Final Four in the first year Ohio offered a girls’ state tournament.
St. Joseph will honor the Fabulous Female Flyers with a luncheon served for invited guests and current players. The luncheon will be at 11 a.m. in the St. Joseph Church undercroft.
The team featured many outstanding players including Terri Hannon, Andrea Waginger Harvey, Mary Ann Holmes Newhouser and All-Ohio point guard Sue Goldcamp who is a member of the University of Charleston Hall of Fame thanks to her outstanding career in basketball and softball at the school.
Goldcamp — one the finest female athletes to play in Lawrence County — is also an outstanding amateur golfer in West Virginia.
Goldcamp recently picked up her first West Virginia women’s Senior Amateur Championship this year by three strokes over 11-time champion Carolina Ramsey. Goldcamp has been among the top-ranked women’s amateur and senior amateur golfers in the state.
