COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets saved their best until the last.

Trailing by 4 points after three quarters, the Lady Hornets outscored Fairview 21-7 in the fourth quarter and beat the Lady Eagles 62-52 Saturday in the annual River Battle.

The “River Battle” was sponsored by John Suiter’s Coal Grove Giovanni’s Pizza.

“We got out to a slow start. We finally had kids step up and score tonight that have not been scoring,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

Jacy Jones scored 15 points to lead Coal Grove (2-3). Leah Crum had 13 points, Morgan Sites scored 11 and Summer Willis 9.

Fairview (1-4) was led by Brittany Bells with 19 points. Madison Humphreys had 11.

The Lady Eagles also played South Point in the first game of the “River Battle” and tired late.

“Give credit to Fairview. They stepped up and played two games on top of playing (Friday night). Coach (Rex) Cooksey and Fairview’s girls are a real class act,” said Roach.

Crum and Kaylee Beals combined for 9 points in the first quarter to keep Coal Grove close at 17-14.

Bell has 8 points in the second quarter as Fairview took a 31-27 halftime lead. Five different players scored in the second quarter for Coal Grove.

Jones scored 6 points in the third quarter and the Lady Hornets still trailed 45-41.

Coal Grove was 12-of-17 from the line in the fourth quarter comeback. Jones was 4-of-4 and Sites was 4-of-5 as she scored 6 points in the quarter.

“A huge play in the fourth quarter came when we were up by one and Brittany Webb knocked down a 3-ball from about 22 feet,” said Roach.
