Contests not just about winning

During the holiday season, many organizations have fundraisers, food or supply drives, or events to furnish their organizations’ needs to help others.
However, several local schools held their own drives to help the Huntington Area Food Bank.
While all those schools should be commended for their efforts, special mention should go the Rock Hill schools and the school district’s National Honor Society that collected more than 650 jars of peanut butter.
While the focus could be on winning the contest, those involved understand that it is more about helping others.
This trait could be overlooked; but the students, parents, teachers, and businesses involved should be applauded for understanding the importance of helping others.
Seeing these examples, especially from our county’s youth, is a testament to the service over self philosophy that many in the Tri-State realize.
These examples along with many others around the region are vital to those organizations’ ability to help others, and doing so shows the spirit of our residents regardless of age.
