COAL GROVE — Keeping things even keel was the key for the Coal Grove Lady Hornets.

Coach Rick Roach knew his Lady Hornets were evenly matched against the Rock Hill Redwomen, so it took some even scoring to produce a 53-42 Ohio Valley Conference win Thursday.

“We knew we matched up well with them, but balanced scoring from us really made a difference,” said Roach. “(Morgan) Sites did a great job on the boards. (Leslie) Mulkey was getting a bunch if you count the deflects which allowed us to score in transition.”

Jacy Jones had 14 points to lead the Lady Hornets (3-4, 1-1) while Leah Crum and Sites were close behind with 12 points each.

Kasey Russell scored 15 points to pace Rock Hill (1-4, 0-2).

Jones, Crum and Sites all hit 3-pointers in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 15-12 lead. Sarah Travis and Russell had triples for the Redwomen.

Jones and Crum scored 6 points each in the second quarter as Coal Grove took a 37-24 halftime lead.

The scoring slowed down in the third quarter as Rock Hill outscored Coal Grove 6-2 and got within 39-30.

“It was a track meet in the first half and we were running fast,” said Roach. “Unfortunately, everyone ran out of gas in the second half.”

Madison Damron and Travis scored 4 points each in the fourth quarter as they tried to help rally the Redwomen.

But the Lady Hornets converted 8-of-9 from the foul line.
