Hunt. St. Joe holds off Coal Grove in thriller

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Keith Clemons and Payne Meadows did most of the damage all night, but when Iain Clarke got involved it was just too much to overcome for the Coal Grove Hornets.

Meadows, Clemens and Clark combined for 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Huntington St. Joe Fighting Irish edged the Hornets 73-67.

Clemons and Meadows scored 24 points each for the Irish (5-0). Clarke finished with 10 points.

Coal Grove (3-2) had four players in double figures. D.J. Miller scored 14 points, Joe Akers had 13, and Conor Markins and Brandon Adkins got 12 points each.

Meadows scored 8 points and Clemens 5 in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 20-16 lead. Miller and Akers scored 5 points each for Coal Grove.

Miller, Akers and Markins all hit 3-pointers in the second quarter as Coal Grove cut the deficit to 37-34 at the half.

Markins and Adkins combined for 9 points in the third quarter and the deficit remained at three points, 51-48.

Eight different players scored for the Hornets in the fourth quarter, but Meadows scored 9 points and Clemens and Clarke 6 points each as the Irish outscored Coal Grove 22-19.

Coal Grove hosts the Dr. Paulus Tournament Friday and Saturday.
