WILLOW WOOD — The Symmes Valley Vikings built themselves a bomb shelter.

The Vikings withstood a long-range bombing by the Sciotoville East Tartans and took a 66-63 Southern Ohio Conference win Friday.

East made 10 3-point goals including six by Drew Lowe and other three by Akia Brown.

“Our defense could have been better, but East shot the ball well. Sometimes there’s not much you can do about that when they shoot it from so far out,” said Vikings’ coach Donnie Saunders.

Dylan Malone scored 22 points for the Vikings (7-3, 5-2). Tyler Rowe had 20 points and Jacob Klaiber got 15.

Lowe finished with 19 points and Brown had 17 to lead East.

The Vikings started hot themselves as Malone scored 13 points and Klaiber six and it was 29-15.

But Lowe hit six 3-pointers in the second quarter as East cut the deficit to 40-32 at the half.

“We came out of the shoot playing pretty, then they knocked down all those 3s and we got in some early foul trouble. We have to learn not to do that. When we get in foul trouble we have to back off and go in another direction,” said Saunders.

Rowe scored 10 points and Malone six in the third quarter, but Brown and Lowe combined for 14 points and the Tartans were within 56-50.

The Vikings held on in the fourth quarter despite making just 4-of-12 from the foul line.

In the reserve game, the Vikings (9-1) won 53-32 as Ryan Sells scored 13 points.
