Derek Battise pitched the pitches he wanted, and as a result he got the win the Ironton Fighting Tigers wanted.

Battise tossed a seven-hitter as he struck out seven, walked six and hit a batter for his second win as Ironton edged the Portsmouth Trojans 2-1 in eight innings on Tuesday.

“Derek pitched great game. He was able to get ahead in the count early on hitters and forced them to swing at pitcher’s pitches,” said Ironton coach Larry Goodwin.

“Offensively, we struggled early with executing of our offense. Lucas Campbell came through with a clutch base hit and ran the bass well and scored the winning run. We executed well in the eighth inning.”

Ironton (3-0) got the winning run when Campbell got a base hit, stole second and went to third on Hunter Klaiber’s sacrifice bunt. Tanner Price then hit a sacrifice fly to score Campbell with the winning run.

Each scored a run in the first inning.

Sky Oliver singled, went to second on an error and scored on a hit by Hunter Gibson for the Trojans run.

In the bottom of the inning, Trevor Easterling singled, Luke Diamond put down a sacrifice bunt and Battise helped his own cause with an RBI double.

Diamond was 2-2 as Ironton had seven hits.

Brandon Wedebrook pitched well in defeat. He went the distance striking out 12 and walking four. Both runs were earned.
