PORTSMOUTH — Playing two five-inning games proved to be double trouble.

Ironton lost a pair of five-inning games to the Portsmouth Trojans Saturday, 8-4 and 2-1.

“Overall, it was a tough day,” said Ironton coach Larry Goodwin. “Derek pitched well in the first game. We made mental mistakes that cost us at least two runs in game one.

“Our youth and inexperience showed today. However, our players will continue to learn from their mistakes and grow as a team. We will remain positive and keep working.”

Ironton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Luke Diamond reached on a missed third strike, Derek Battise walked, Hunter Weber sacrifice the runners up and Diamond scored on a passed ball.

Portsmouth tied the game with a run in the second, but Ironton regained the lead with a run in the top of the third.

Trevor Easterling singled, Diamond walked, Weber reached on an error to load the bases and Lucas Campbell hit a sacrifice fly.

Portsmouth then scored six runs in the bottom of the inning on three singles, two hit batsmen and a three-run double by Brandon Wedebrook.

The Fighting Tigers scored twice in the fourth to trail 7-4.

With two outs, Dre Boehn singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Easterling. After Easterling stole second, Diamond had an RBI single.

The Trojans added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to cap the scoring.

In the second game, all the scoring was in the fifth inning.

Ironton scored when Tanner Price reached on a three-base error and came home on a wild pitch.

Portsmouth got a leadoff double by A. Mullins, Kahlil Lattimore then walked and Mullins stole third. Isaiah Lisath grounded out as Mullins scored the tying run.

Sky Oliver got an intentional walk and reliever Luke Diamond struck out the next batter. But Brandon Wedebrook walked to load the bases and Tanner Poage was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run.

Battise and Wedebrook both pitched three-hitters in the nightcap. Battise struck out eight and walked five. Wedebrook fanned eight and walked one.
