Danny McKnight

Danny L. McKnight, 71, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, at his residence. The Ironton native was born Feb. 10, 1943, the son of the late Lester L. McKnight and Dorothy Waller McKnight Markin. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Avery McKnight.

Mr. McKnight was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former employee of the Dayton Malleable Iron Company for 19 years, retiring in 1983. He also operated McKnights Greenhouse from 1989-2001, loved to coon hunt, fish and watch old westerns on TV. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Kitts Hill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Danny L. McKnight II and Danny Scott McKnight; a daughter, Leisa Gayle McKnight; a sister, Gayle Butler; a brother, Mike Markin; and a great-granddaughter, Jade Alyssa Jiles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Dana (Mike Kincaid) Jiles, Cindy (Paul) Isgett, all of Ironton, and Kathy (Shawn Yates) Large, of South Point; a son, Brett (Erika) McKnight of Chillicothe; a brother, Ron (Sue) McKnight, of Ironton; five sisters-in-law, Sharon (Jack) Delong, Pamela (Ted) Sprouse, Deborah (Don) Barker, Lana (Mike) Markel, all of Ironton, and Patsy (Gene) Dye of Racine, Wis.; two brothers-in-law: Larry Avery of Ironton and Wayne Butler of Greensboro, N.C.; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton with pastor Sam Cooke officiating. Gordon Kitts

Gordon Lee Kitts, 91, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, at a local health care facility. The Ironton native was born Sept. 3, 1922, the son of the late Noble and Willie Corn Kitts. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Rosalee Harrison Kitts.

Mr. Kitts was a graduate of Kitts Hill High School and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran. He was an electrician for the Dayton Malleable Iron Company, retiring in 1984 after 38 years of service with them. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed golf and fishing. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Etna Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Kitts and Glendon Kitts; and a sister, Edna Triplett.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenny (Jindra) Kitts, of Ashland, Ky., Kevin (Andrea) Kitts, of Wurtland, Ky., and Karl (Marydan) Kitts of Fairview, N.C.; a daughter, Kathy Kitts Cooke, of Ironton; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with pastor Greg Frasure officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 8850. Ivan Kouns

Ivan Earl “Jock” Kouns, 84, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Saturday evening, May 10, 2014, at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born June 24, 1929, in Ashland, a son of the late Edgar and Margaret Farmer Kouns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William L. “Joner”, Paul E., and Melvin Ray Kouns.

Jock was a graduate of Ashland High School. He was a member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 350 in Ashland. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his family. He retired after many years of service from Good Year Atomic Energy in Piketon.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Wanda Kouns, of Ashland; son, Rick (Laura) Kouns of Round Rock, Texas; daughters, Kim Sutton, of Ashland, and Heather (Mark) McDonald, of Richmond, Ky.; sister, Barbara Waginger, of Ironton; and grandchildren, Madison, Brendan and Connor Kouns, Chelsea, Jessica and Tyler Sutton, and Austin and Logan McDonald.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Sharon McDonald. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Richard A. Garretson, 45, of Huntington, W.Va., died Thursday, May 8, 2014. Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Walter Junior Gorby, 89, of Proctorville, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Huntington Health and Rehabilitation Center, Huntington, W.Va. Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by Pastor Jason Morris. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville. Proctorville VFW Post 6878 will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
