CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds revamped their bench for a series against the St. Louis Cardinals, calling up outfielder Donald Lutz and optioning infielder Neftali Soto to Triple-A Louisville.

They also had right fielder Jay Bruce back in the starting lineup Friday night for the series opener. Bruce had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee on May 5. He was activated Wednesday, but didn’t appear in a victory at Washington.

The Reds still are missing first baseman Joey Votto, on the disabled list with a strained muscle above his left knee.

Lutz played in 34 games for the Reds last season. He opened this season at Double-A Pensacola and was promoted to Louisville. Soto batted .107 with one RBI in 19 games.
