Ironton HOF nomination dinner set for Aug. 23

The Ironton High School athletic Hall of Fame nomination dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Ironton Eagles Lodge.

Cost is $15 for a single and $25 for a couple and a meal will be provided. Each ticket gives the holder one vote towards a Hall of Fame nominee. Persons must be present to vote.

The committee has selected five nominees for the ballot and two more will be added for a total of seven by vote to the attendees to the nomination dinner.

Five candidates already on the ballot are Glenn Presnell, Carl White, Bill Washburn, John Leach and Phil Rice.

OVC volleyball previews scheduled for Aug. 15

The Ohio Valley Conference volleyball preview will be held Friday, Aug. 15, at South Point High School.

Here is the schedule:

5 p.m. — St. Joseph vs. Coal Grove; 6 p.m. — Chesapeake vs. Portsmouth; 7 p.m. — Ironton vs. Fairland; 8 p.m. — Rock Hill vs. South Point.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors 60 and older.

 

OVC football previews scheduled for Aug. 16

The Ohio Valley Conference football preview will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at Coal Grove High School.

Here is the schedule:

5 p.m. — South Point vs. Rock Hill; 6 p.m. — Chesapeake vs. Portsmouth; 7 p.m. — Ironton vs. Fairland; 8 p.m. — Coal Grove vs. Portsmouth West.

7-12-year-old fall league for baseball forming

A fall baseball league for ages 7-12 at the Ironton Little League is being formed. Anyone interested in playing should attend an organizational meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the fields.

Ironton sports festival hosting golf scramble

The Ironton Sports Festival will host a benefit golf scramble Saturday, Aug. 23, at Diamond Links Golf Course.

Entry fee is $200 per four-person team and includes a meal.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and last-place teams as well as door prizes.

There will be a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

SOC volleyball preview schedule for Aug. 16

The Southern Ohio Conference girls’ volleyball preview will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at Portsmouth Clay High School beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is $5.

Here is the schedule:

Portsmouth Clay vs. South Webster; Sciotoville East vs. Northwest; Eastern vs. Portsmouth West; Green vs. Lucasville Valley; Symmes Valley vs. Minford; New Boston vs. Oak Hill; Western vs. Wheelersburg.

 

Annual Flyer 5K run

scheduled for Aug. 16

The fourth annual Ironton Catholic Schools Flyer 5K run in cooperation with Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and Ironton Urgent Care will be held starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the high school on the corner of Fifth and Quincy streets.

Fee is $15 before Aug. 9 and $20 after that date. Same day registration will be from 7-7:45 a.m. Checks may be made payable to Ironton Catholic Schools (912 S. Sixth St., Ironton, OH 45638).

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers overall and in each of the 15 age groups. There will be no duplications. Tech shirts will be guaranteed to the first 200 runners. There were 283 entries last year.

 

South Point boosters plan benefit golf scramble

The South Point athletic boosters will conduct a golf scramble Sunday, Aug. 24, at Diamond Links Golf Course in Catlettsburg, Ky.

Registration is at 12:15 p.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Cost if $65 per player.

There will be competitive awards and door prizes. Lunch will be provided by Texas Roadhouse.

All proceeds to to the boosters.

CG Lions Club to hold benefit golf scramble

The Coal Grove Lions Club annual golf scramble will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Ironton Country Club.

Entry fee is $150 for a three-man team. A free dinner will be served by the Texas Roadhouse. Door prizes plus course competition prizes will be awarded.

Interested sponsors may purchase individual hole signs for $50 each.

 

Patriots baseball plans development league

The Huntington Patriots/Tri-State Baseball Academy fall development league will be held Aug. 15 to Oct. 10.

Tryouts will be held for 13under and 16under travel program.

Basketball officiating

class to start Sept. 13

The Ironton Chapter of Ohio High School Basketball Officials in conjunction with the Ohio High School Athletic Association will offer a licensing class beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Chesapeake Middle School.

The class consists of rule interpretation, officiating mechanics and live on-court officiating of high school scrimmages.

Fee is $140 and covers all testing and initial license with the class participant responsible for his or her officiating uniform.

Bobcat Bash planned

for Kentucky game

Ohio University will sponsor a pre-game alumni Bobcat Bash from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, when the Bobcats play Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.

Alumni and friends are invited to enjoy food and drinks as they reconnect with fellow Bobcats.

Admission price includes two tickets redeemable for alcoholic beverages. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available.
