The Cause reaching out to cancer victims

SOUTH POINT — It’s been 10 years since doctors told Stacy Murray-Medcalf she was cancer free.

This Saturday at the South Point Community Center Murray-Medcalf will celebrate that anniversary with her non profit organization The Cause Inc. by bringing resource awareness to those in Lawrence County dealing with cancer and other disease.

“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I was 38 years old,” Murray-Medcalf said. “I wasn’t aware of the resources that were available to me. It wasn’t until after I was declared cancer free that I started to discover all of these different resources that would have made my ordeal easier.”

So Murray-Medcalf along with her husband and some friends of the family, decided to organize an event to promote those resources to others. The event grew and eventually became a full-blown organization aptly named The Cause Inc.

“We just wanted to help people understand there is help out there,” Murray-Medcalf said. “That you aren’t alone, you have resources and the resources we promote aren’t just limited to those dealing with disease but their family members as well.”

The awareness event on Saturday will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and several area health care providers will be on hand to discuss handling disease and to provide free health screenings.

“Promotion and awareness of the resources is very important, it’s vital,” Murray-Medcalf said. “These resources may be able to provide you the treatment or help you need. One phone number could save a life, so it’s important we let people know all of the options they have available to help them.”
