RIO GRANDE — Maybe the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings could use an eye doctor.

The Lady Vikings didn’t stay totally focused and shot poorly from the field in a 49-41 loss to the South Gallia Lady Rebels on Saturday in the Hoops Project Classic at the University of Rio Grande.

“We had a stretch in the second quarter where South Gallia was more focused on getting the job done than we were,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Brandon Walker.

“Credit them. They shot the ball extremely well and we didn’t. As hot as we were Thursday is as cold as we were (Saturday). We also gave up a lot of second chance points to them due to a lack of rebounding.”

Breanna Brumfield scored 14 and had three steals in being named her team’s Most Valuable Player for the game.

“Brumfield played really well,” said Walker.

Elly Fulks scored 10 points and Meranda Hayes added 9 points and 7 rebounds for the Lady Vikings (1-2).

Mikayla Poling had 21 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Lady Rebels who shot 20 of 38 from the floor for 52.6 percent. Symmes Valley was just 15 of 50 for 30 percent.

Hayes scored 7 of her points in the first quarter and Fulks added 4 points as the Lady Vikings took a 13-11 lead.

But Symmes Valley scored just 4 points in the second quarter.

Poling and Ashley Northup had 5 each to put the Lady Rebels up 25-17 at the half.

Brumfield scored 7 points in the third quarter but South Gallia extended its lead to 40-29.

“All our errors are correctable, we just have to continue to improve,” said Walker.

Symmes Valley hosts Beaver Eastern at 6 p.m. Monday in a varsity-only game.
