The Boy Scouts of America’s motto provides some of the finest words of wisdom that can be found, and it is fitting regardless of age or gender.

Be prepared.

With the nice weather we have seen the past couple of days, the winter season has begun and inevitably winter conditions will make itself known at some point. That weather can make travel difficult and will require people to amend their normal routines.

When the forecast calls for severe winter weather, the mad rush is on to get the necessities. It is always good to be ready for the snow, ice and whatever may be in store.

Residents throughout the county and region should have a preparedness kit.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides some key items to include in the kit:

• water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days;

• food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food;

• battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both;

• flashlight and extra batteries;

• first aid kit;

• whistle to signal for help;

• moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation;

• can opener for food (if kit contains canned food);

• cellphone with chargers

Ultimately, making preparations now can make all the difference later.
