Less than a week after losing his left arm in a traffic accident, Greg Moore was back at a game with his second family.

Moore, the head girls basketball coach at New Washington Buckeye Central, was injured on Jan. 21 when the minivan he was driving for his job at FedEx was struck by a garbage truck.

“They tried to save enough of it to fit on a prosthetic,” BC athletic director Kevin Vargyas told the Mansfield News-Journal at the time. “He’s in the hospital and telling jokes, trying to have fun with it.”

Six days later, Moore was coaching his team to a 56-41 victory over Morral Ridgedale.

“Sometimes, we get caught up, and it’s not about basketball,” Moore said. “It’s about the little things in life. I think (the players) are starting to realize that, and we’re starting to become a family.”

Before the game, Ridgedale’s players and coaches presented Moore with a game ball on which they had written notes and signed their names.

“Greg’s just from a different mold,” Rockets coach Jamie Thompson said. “He’s just an unbelievable character, and to be back with his kids so quick, I just have a ton of respect for him.”

Isabelle Biglin scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half to lead the Rockets (7-8).

“I love this town, and I love this group,” Moore said. “And, like I said, it was more than about basketball tonight.”
