SOUTH POINT — Lawrence Countians were put on alert Monday after a South Point resident reported an unknown person impersonating a sheriff’s office employee asking for donations.

The person was identified as a white male wearing tan clothing and driving a black SUV.

“This person told her (the resident) the money was to help the sheriff’s office,” sheriff Jeff Lawless said via Facebook. :He would not accept a check and only wanted cash.”

Lawless said the sheriff’s office is not going door-to-door asking for money.

“Please do not give any money to anyone claiming to be with the sheriff’s office, or most other organizations. We do not solicit money that way,” Lawless said. “If you are approached, please call the sheriff’s office immediately so that we can attempt to catch this person.”
