Joan Reed

Joan Reed, 70, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015, at her residence. The Ironton native was born April 13, 1944, a daughter of the late Charles and Edith Wells. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Reed, who passed away March of 1998.

Mrs. Reed was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and retired from AK Steel in 1993 after 28 years of service with them. She was a member of the Campbell Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Ironton.

She is survived by a daughter, Jessica Reed of Ironton; a sister, Carmeleeta (Dick) Stewart of South Point; two brothers, John (Susie) Wells of Elkhart, Indiana and Fred (Barbara) Wells of Ironton; and four grandchildren, Edie Fadis, Caleb Porter, Braxton Porter and Adalyn Porter, all of Ironton.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home with pastor Bob Bradley officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens and visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Ena Bridges

July 23, 1925 — March 9, 2015

 

Ena May Bridges, 89, of Ashland, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015, at a local health care facility. Mrs. Bridges was born in Windsor, England, on July 23, 1925, daughter of late Albert McFarlane and Florence Wootten McFarlane. Ena attended school in England, and was the first WWII war bride of Lawrence County, when she married her first late husband, Ray E. Massie.

Mrs. Bridges was a member of Central Christian Church for many years where she enjoyed helping with the food pantry. Ena worked at the Ironton J.C. Penney and volunteered at Jo-Lin Nursing Home.

In addition to her parents and first husband, Ena was preceded in death by second husband, Leroy H. Bridges; son, David A. Massie; brother, Alec McFarlane; brother, Alan Douglas McFarlane; sister, Ivy Oxley; sister-in-law, Edna McFarlane; and special friend, Kathleen Nelson.

She is survived by son, Wayne E. (Sherlene) Massie of Franklin Furnace; son, Daniel R. (Mary Ann) Massie of Franklin Furnace; stepson, Leroy D. Bridges of Springfield, Missouri; stepdaughter, Sharon K. Bradshaw of Ironton; stepdaughter, Jessica Kennedy of Colorado; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and brother, Donald McFarlane of High Wycomb, England.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Tracy Brammer, Monroe Funeral Home with minister Willie Purdee officiating. Burial will follow in Mamre Cemetery with visitation from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home. Phillips Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
