AID — Forget the leftovers. What about the left ons?

The Symmes Valley Vikings left 13 runners on base in a 4-2 Southern Ohio Conference loss to the Portsmouth Clay Panthers on Wednesday.

“We had a couple of errors and left 13 guys on base. You can’t do those things and expect to win. We just didn’t play well,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

The Vikings (5-1, 4-1) left the bases loaded in the third, two in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

Clay (2-3, 1-1) took the lead in the first inning when Conner Phipps walked, stole second and scored on an error.

The Panthers got three runs in the third inning to lead 4-0.

Keith Cottle singled, Phipps walked, Devin Holocomb singled and the Vikings committed two errors.

The Vikings got a run in the fifth when Tyler Carpenter walked, Blake Bowen reached on an error and Dillon McFann singled.

The second run came in the seventh when Tanner Mays walked, stole second, moved up on a passed ball and Jacob Klaiber hit a sacrifice fly.

Trent Thompson pitched well in defeat. He gave up only three hits, struck out nine, walked two and hit a batter.

Phipps got the win with a seven-hitter. He struck out one and walked three.
